Press Release

N. Date is an artist who’s biographical data is largely unknown. And Fish & Horses is only the second solo presentation of the work of this enigmatic figure in a public setting.

Five enamel on metal works are presented here for the first time. They have recently resurfaced in Taxco, Mexico, where it is believed N. Date spent time and got involved with the creative community in the 1970s. It is presumed they are left-behind examples of Date´s early work which soon after became more interested in abstraction and more ethereal ideas.

Both, doing research for and experiencing this presentation, demand a non-conformist notions of truth, geography and time. Date’s traces indicate the artist could have been, in fact, a wordly character; one that triggered an asynchronous and sometimes unbelievable story.

Influenced by radically dissimilar art movements, and shaped by the unsteady path of foreign writers that went through Mexico during the 20th century, Date’s practice insinuate that ideas surrounding coincidence, incompleteness, doubt and incoherence had become the leading principles of an extraordinary life.
